Day 8- Experiencing the Gap Cave as the Civil War Soldiers Did

If you read our last post, you saw what the cave was like as we explored with our flashlights.  There were several  stalagmites and stalactites.  A stalagmite is an upward-growing mound of mineral deposits that have precipitated from water dripping onto the floor of a cave and a stalactite grows from the roof.  In several spots, we had to duck or walk around cave growths.  Also, in some spots, there were massive drop offs.  We were protected with guard rails I can;t even imagine what it would have been like exploring this cave by candelight.  At one point in our tour, the guide had us all turn off our lights and they did a simulation so that we could see what it would have bene like for the civil war soldiers.  Unlike our flashlights which provide directional light, the candlelight only provides light around your fist.  It would have been much more dangerous and much scarier.
